AC-J — Speed control for AC fans
Click on drawing to view large scale version

SmartFan AC-J is available for 115 or 230 VAC PSC or shaded pole fans and blowers with current ratings up to 3.5 Amps. AC-J operates at either 50 or 60 Hz power line frequency as selected by a jumper on the board. Control Temperature is selected by means of a jumper. AC-J is compatible with temperature sensors P1 thru P9 shown on Sensors page.

Features

  • Current rating is 3.5 Amps in air stream, 2.0 Amps in still air
  • Selectable Control Temperatures of 35°, 40° or 45°C (74°, 80° or 86°C with P3 surface sensor)
  • Models optimized for PSC or shaded pole air movers
  • Compact size

UL recognized to UL508 and CSA-C22.2, File E100344
IEC 950, VDE 0806 approved TUV Rheinland File E77132

INSTALLATION

Mounting

To satisfy safety agency requirements (UL, CSA, IEC, VDE), allow 1/4" (6.3 mm) between the circuit board and chassis ground and 5/16" (8 mm) to any uninsulated secondary circuits. To satisfy UL, a normal blow fuse rated 10 Amps or less should be used in the power line circuit.

Sensor Selection
There is no polarity consideration when connecting the sensor. Click here to view Sensors page: Sensors

OPERATION

Fan Speed vs. Sensor Temperature
The relationship between fan speed, as a percentage of full speed, and sensed temperature is shown in Figure 2. Full speed occurs at the Control Temperature (Tc ).
Figure 2 Fan speed vs. sensor temperature

Settings
Control Temperature (J4): Use this jumper to set control temperature (Tc ) to 35°, 40°, or 45°C. Factory setting is 40°C. If the P3 sensor is used, Control Temperature settings are 74°, 80°, and 86°C.
Line Frequency (J3): Use this jumper to set the line frequency to 50 or 60 Hz. Factory setting is 60 Hz.

Testing
If operated at reduced speeds, the rotational speed of AC fans is sensitive to static pressure load. Fans should be installed and working against the intended system resistance before checking idle speed. Most fans will idle well above one-half speed if they are not loaded.
